SEEKING COUNSELLING

The loss of a baby whether through early or late miscarriage, death in utero, or stillbirth, can be a devastating experience for expectant parents.  The grief can be crippling.  Parents who have lost a child can feel like they will never experience happiness again.  Many emotions can arise such as anger towards other pregnant women, self-blame, worthlessness, meaninglessness, fear, and desperation for another pregnancy.  Some people feel that they could never survive the anxiety of another pregnancy.  Some people say that their families and friends don't really understand their loss, expecting another pregnancy to make everything okay.  Some people experience significant anxiety and depression as a result losing a child, and this can seriously impair their functioning.

I am so sorry for the loss that has brought you here.

You may be seeking counselling from a therapist who understands the deep and profound anguish that accompanies the loss of a baby. A therapist who comprehends the devastation of infertility, miscarriage, stillbirth and newborn loss. A therapist who can support and facilitate the unbiased, non-judgemental process of pregnancy decision making. A therapist who recognises and treats the paralysing anxiety that can accompany a pregnancy, and parenting, after loss.

As Co-Founder of The Perinatal Loss Centre and Principal Clinical Psychologist of the Antenatal & Postnatal Psychology Network, I have worked with bereaved parents for over 20 years, and have trained therapists who have sought to expand their clinical expertise to incorporate working with bereaved parents.

Together with the Centre of Perinatal Excellence (COPE), The Perinatal Loss Centre provides an online training course that educates therapists world-wide in the area of perinatal grief and loss. The course “Perinatal Loss in Practice: What Therapists Need to Know”, has been undertaken by psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counsellors, from both hospital and community centre settings and private practice.

I am not only passionate about educating therapists, I am also committed to helping bereaved parents access timely help – whether that be through community-based or professional support. To this end, The Perinatal Loss Centre has established a Therapist Register that lists the Australian therapists (state by state) who have completed my training.
